People read one thing then another, then get confused/awkward about attribution of awesome/comparisons (because some writers, remixed and remixers, have occasionally whined about this because of tactless commenters).
Or else the remixed story is too closely tied to the original and people are lazy about reading the original first, so the remix does not make sense as a standalone story (which is intentional in many remixes). It all adds up. Or cuts down, as the case may be.
Possibly one way of encouraging discussion (that I saw in another fandom bigbang) is a discussion post with comment threads for each story, so people can post their thoughts/questions/etc - it gives a clear subject rather than forcing people to try to think of things to say.
